FSSAI Renewal

FSSAI renewal is the process of extending the validity of your food license issued by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. It ensures continued compliance with food safety regulations and must be done before license expiry to avoid penalties.

FSSAI Renewal – FSSAI Registration and License Renewal

Renewing your FSSAI license or registration is a mandatory step for maintaining legal compliance and ensuring uninterrupted operations of your food business. At Easy My Tax, we streamline the renewal process, helping you meet food safety standards as per the latest FSSAI regulations. Whether your license is about to expire or has already lapsed, our expert team ensures a smooth and error-free renewal.

Importance of FSSAI License and Registration

Any business involved in food manufacturing, distribution, transportation, or storage in India must possess a valid FSSAI license or registration. The license ensures your business meets national food safety standards and enhances consumer confidence. It also provides a legal foundation for your business to operate, grow, and build trust.

FSSAI Registration for Small-Scale Food Businesses

If your food business has an annual turnover of less than ₹12 lakhs, FSSAI registration is required. This applies to small food manufacturers or operators, helping them legally function under government regulations. A 14-digit FSSAI number is issued upon registration and must be displayed on packaging and promotional materials.

FSSAI License for Medium and Large Businesses

For businesses with a turnover exceeding ₹12 lakhs, a formal FSSAI license is mandatory. The type of license depends on business size and operation scope:

  • State License: For medium-sized businesses operating within a single state and having turnover between ₹12 lakhs and ₹20 crores.
  • Central License: Required for large-scale businesses with turnover over ₹20 crores, or those operating across multiple states or involved in import/export.

Validity of FSSAI Licenses and Registrations

FSSAI credentials are valid for a limited time and must be renewed periodically. According to the FSSAI order dated January 11, 2023:

  • FSSAI Registration: Valid for 1 to 5 years based on the applicant’s preference.
  • State License: Valid for 1 year.
  • Central License: Valid for 1 year.

Businesses must ensure timely renewals to avoid disruption in operations.

Why Timely Renewal is Important

Renewing your FSSAI license or registration before it expires is crucial for maintaining compliance. Delays or expired licenses can lead to legal action or halt your operations. Early renewal also ensures peace of mind and keeps your business reputation intact.

Benefits of FSSAI License/Registration Renewal

Renewing your FSSAI license offers a range of benefits for food business operators:

  • Ensures continuous legal operation without interruptions
  • Boosts customer trust by maintaining valid certifications
  • Helps avoid heavy penalties due to expired licenses
  • Keeps your business aligned with evolving food safety norms
  • Enhances your brand’s credibility and trustworthiness
  • Facilitates easier market expansion and trade deals
  • Provides updates on regulatory changes
  • Encourages stronger operational and safety practices

FSSAI Renewal Timeline

FSSAI regulations allow FBOs to begin their license or registration renewal 180 days before the expiry date. However, the renewal must be initiated at least 30 days before the license expires to avoid a late fee.

Late Fee for Delayed License Renewal

If the license renewal is initiated after the 30-day pre-expiry window, a late fee of ₹100 per day is charged in addition to the renewal fee. This late fee applies only to licenses, not registrations.

Renewal After License Expiry

If a license is not renewed before expiry, it can still be renewed within the following grace periods:

  • Within 90 days: A late fee of three times the normal annual fee is charged.
  • Between 91 and 180 days: An additional charge of two times the normal fee, totaling five times the regular fee.

This policy allows the same license number to be retained but emphasizes timely action to avoid higher costs.

Documents Required for FSSAI License Renewal

The following documents are typically needed for renewing your FSSAI license:

  • FSMS Certificate (Food Safety Management System)
  • Updated nominee details
  • Information on any required license modifications
  • Supporting documents for modifications on company letterhead
  • Any additional documents requested by the licensing authority
  • Additional compliance-related certificates (if applicable)
